Physical Therapy
You have probably heard of physical therapy. Maybe your friend had physical therapy to help get rid of back pain, or after an injury or operation. Many people are familiar with physical therapists helping patients with orthopedic problems, such as low back pain or knee surgeries, to reduce pain and regain function. Others may be aware of the treatment physical therapists provide to assist patients recovering from a stroke.Physical therapists are experts in movement and function and so not confined to treating people who are ill or injured. A large part of what a physical therapist does is directed at preventing injury, loss of movement and even surgery. Physical therapists often consult on improving the workplace design and reducing the risk of workers overusing certain muscles or developing low back pain. They provide services to athletes at all levels to screen for potential problems and institute preventive exercise programs. Many physical therapists are engaged in consulting with recreational golfers and weekend warriors to develop safe and effective workouts.
The cornerstones of physical therapy treatment are therapeutic exercise and functional training. In addition to "hands-on" care, physical therapists educate patients to take care of themselves and to perform certain exercises on their own. Remember, prevention through exercise and education is always easier than battling back from an injury – and physical therapists can work with you to get – and stay – healthy and strong.
