June is National Safety Month
Every six minutes a fatal injury occurs! Every year, unintentional injuries kill more Americans between the ages of 1 - 44 than any other cause. In an effort to keep people safe this summer and throughout the year, here are general tips:
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is the #1 cause of fatal gas poisoning in the US – and is the most preventable. In Illinois, home carbon monoxide detectors are required by law. More info can be found here.
Sun Safety
Summer is finally here and many of us are rushing outside,
but forget about harmful sun exposure. The National Safety
Council has a reminder to use sunscreen with a high SPF.
Apply sunscreen before going out, after swimming and every
two hours if you intend to stay in the sun for prolonged
periods. If possible, avoid excessive sun exposure between
11AM and 3PM when the sun's rays are strongest.
Travel Smart
Always buckle your safety belt - it's the law, not just a good
idea. Don't drink and drive and always watch out for the other
guy. Remember you can't control other drivers. Watch for
these signs of possible drunk or distracted driving:
- Excessive or very slow speeds;
- Swerving or straddling the center lane;
- Near-misses with other vehicles;
- No response to traffic signals; and,
- Driving in the dark with the headlights off.
